چکیده

The cuneiform (CnF) and Kolliker-Fuse (KF) nuclei are implicated in several functions including regulation of cardiovascular system and pain modulation. The KF also is a potential candidate for relaying the CnF cardiovascular responses to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). In a previous study we showed that blockade of the KF strongly attenuated the short responses and moderately attenuated the long responses to glutamate microinjection into the CnF, suggesting that the cardiovascular effects of the CnF, especially the short responses, were mediated by the KF. In the present study the cellular basis of the cardiovascular responses of the CnF and possible role of the KF in relaying them to the RVLM were explored. In one group, l-glutamate was microinjected in the CnF and the cardiovascular responses were recorded. In another group the single unit responses of the KF to l-glutamate injection into the CnF were recorded. Our results showed that chemical stimulation of the CnF with glutamate produced mainly excitatory cardiovascular and single unit responses and a minority of mixed (excitatory and inhibitory) responses. In about one fourth of the cases there were no responses to stimulation. Various patterns of each group were presented and compared between cardiovascular and single unit responses. Similarities were found between cardiovascular and single unit response patterns, suggesting a significant role of KF neurons in mediating the CnF cardiovascular responses to the RVLM.

Effect of Reversible Inactivation of the Kolliker Fuse Nucleus on Basal Blood Pressure and Heart Rate in Anesthetized Rat

Introduction: Several supra spinal areas such as rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) area are involved in basic cardiovascular regulation. The Kolliker— Fuse nucleus (KF) is located in pons and is heavily connected with RVLM. The cardiovascular effect of KF nucleus has been shown and it is suggested that KF is involved in sympathetic vasomotor tone and basic cardiovascular regulation. Therefor...

Cardiovascular responses produced by resistin injected into paraventricular nucleus mediated by the glutamatergic and CRFergic transmissions within rostral ventrolateral medulla

Objective(s): Resistin, as a 12.5 kDa cysteine-rich polypeptide, is expressed in hypothalamus and regulates sympathetic nerve activity. It is associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we investigated the neural pathway of cardiovascular responses induced by injection of resistin into paraventricular nucleus (PVN) with rostr...

Glutaminergic receptor in the rostroal ventrolateral medulla mediate the cardiovascular responses to activation of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis in female ovariectomized rat

Introduction: Experiments were done to investigate the cardiovascular response to glutamate (Glu) injection in the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) in urethane anesthetized ovariectomized (OVX) or OVX estrogen  treated (OVX+E)  female Wistar rats. In this study also the effect of glutaminergic system of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) on Glu stimulation of cardiovascular...

Central administration of resistin into the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) produces significant cardiovascular responses

Introduction: Resistin, a complex multimeric structure which is secreted by adipose tissue and circulates in the blood, acts on the hypothalamus to increase sympathetic nerve activity, inhibit appetite and is associated with obesity, insulin resistance and cardiovascular disorders. In this study, we survey the cardiovascular effects of direct injection of resistin into specific cell group of th...

Effect of GABAA Receptors in the Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla on Cardiovascular Response to the Activation of the Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis in Female Ovariectomized Rats

Background: The areas of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) with a high density of estrogen receptors are involved in cardiovascular regulation and send axonal projections to the rostroventrolateral medulla (RVLM). We aimed to find the contribution of the RVLM to cardiovascular responses elicited by glutamate microinjection into the BST. Methods: Experiments were done in α-ch...
